Bot-free meeting recording captures a call's audio without sending an automated participant into the meeting. Instead of a notetaker bot that joins and appears in the attendee list, the audio is recorded locally on your own device — the way a screen recording works. The benefit is privacy and naturalness: nothing announces itself, and it works even where meeting bots are blocked. Reline records your microphone and the meeting's system audio locally on macOS and Windows (Linux in beta), so no bot ever joins your Zoom, Teams, Meet, or Webex call.
In practice
In a normal week, bot-free recording shows up on client calls, interviews and internal syncs where an extra attendee would feel odd or is not allowed. You start capture on your own computer, and the meeting looks the same to everyone else. The common failure is sound: if the tool only hears your microphone, the other side is missing from the transcript, so check that it records system audio too. Also check where the audio goes after capture, whether you can replay it, and how speakers are labeled, since a local recorder does not see the participant list the way a bot does. And tell people you are recording. Bot-free changes how you capture, and the duty to ask stays the same.
How Reline does it

Join your call as usual, then click “Quick note”. A new note opens and recording starts right away.

Questions
- Can other people tell if I record a meeting without a bot?
- Usually not from the call itself. No extra attendee appears, and the meeting app's own recording notice is not triggered, because its recorder is not in use. That is exactly why you should say it out loud: tell people at the start that you are recording and why.
- Is it legal to record a meeting without a bot?
- It depends on where the people on the call are, and a bot changes nothing about that. Many places allow recording when one person consents, while others, such as California or Germany, need everyone's consent. Rules at work can be stricter. The safe habit: tell everyone before you start, and stop if someone objects.
- Does bot-free recording work if my company blocks meeting bots?
- Technically, yes. Blocks work on participants: waiting rooms, guest rules and admin settings keep a bot out. A bot-free recorder never joins, so those blocks do not affect it. A block often reflects a policy, though, so check your company's recording rules before you rely on it.
