To get a Google Meet transcript, start it during the call: Meeting tools, Transcribe, Start transcription. It needs an eligible paid plan, and usually the host or a co-host. The Doc lands in the organizer's Drive, in the Google Meet folder. Free Google accounts are not on Google's list, so those calls need a separate tool such as Reline.

Which Google plans include Meet transcripts

Google lists Transcripts on Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, the Teaching and Learning Upgrade, Education Plus and Workspace Individual. Free personal Google accounts and Business Starter are not on that list. Neither is Google One, although Google's recording page names Google One plans with 2 TB or more, so if you pay for Google One or a Google AI plan, check that Transcribe shows up before you rely on it.

The feature is on by default, except for Education student licenses, and an admin may have turned it off. It does not run by itself: someone starts it in each meeting, unless the host set it to start automatically.

Who can start a Google Meet transcript

  • Host management on: only the host and co-hosts.
  • Host management off: anyone from the host's domain.
  • Device: a computer, laptop or Android device. Google's page does not list iPhone or iPad.

So a guest from another company generally has to ask the host. Your own free account does not stop a paid host from starting a transcript in a meeting you join, but the file stays on the host's side.

How to start and stop a transcript in Google Meet

Older guides may show a different menu. These are Google's current steps on a computer:

  1. Join or start the meeting in Google Meet.
  2. At the bottom right, click Meeting tools, then Transcribe, then Start transcription.
  3. In the pop-up, click Start. A Transcripts icon appears at the top right for everyone in the meeting.
  4. To stop, open Meeting tools, click Transcribing, then Stop transcription, and confirm with Stop. Transcripts also stop on their own when everyone has left.

You cannot pause a transcript. You can stop it and start again, and each start makes a separate file. Only spoken words are captured: for the chat, Google says to record the meeting. There must be enough space in both your organization's Drive and the host's Drive. Google lists eight languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish.

A host who wants this every time can set it to start automatically: Video call options, Meeting records, Transcribe the meeting. It begins once the host or a co-host joins on the web, and people joining get an on-screen warning. An admin can also require people to consent before it starts (off by default).

Gemini's Take notes for me is a different feature: it writes notes into a Doc, on an eligible Workspace edition or Google AI plan. If you need the words, start Transcribe as well.

Where to find your Google Meet transcript

  • In the organizer's Google Drive: the Google Meet folder, with a subfolder for each meeting. If you did not organize the meeting, the file is in the organizer's Drive, not yours.
  • In your email: after the meeting, the host, co-hosts and the person who started it get a link. Longer meetings take longer to process, so give it time.
  • On the Calendar event: the transcript is attached to the meeting's event, and all invitees in the host's organization can open it. With more than 200 invitees in the organization, only the host, co-hosts and the person who started it have access.

Older guides send you to a folder called Meet Recordings. Google says that starting July 2026 that folder is renamed Legacy Meet Recordings and moved inside the Google Meet folder, and your old transcripts stay available.

Were you a guest from outside the host's organization? Google's access rules above do not cover you, so ask the organizer to share the Doc.

How to download a Google Meet transcript

The transcript is a Google Docs file, so it downloads like any other Doc.

  1. Open the transcript from Drive, the email link or the Calendar event.
  2. At the top, click File, then Download.
  3. Choose a file type, such as Word or PDF. The file lands on your computer.

How to get a Google Meet transcript after the meeting

If nobody started a transcript, Google documents no way to create one later: its steps begin inside a live meeting, and transcripts stop when everyone leaves.

If the meeting was recorded, you may still get text from the video. The recording is in the organizer's Drive, in the same Google Meet folder, so the organizer can do this:

  1. In Drive, right-click the video and open Manage caption tracks (under File information). If there are no captions yet, generate automatic captions. While the video plays, More also opens Manage caption tracks.
  2. Open the video, click the gear icon at the bottom right and select Transcript. It opens in a sidebar you can read and search.
  3. To get a file, download the captions: Google says anyone who can edit the video can do that.

Reline cannot help with a meeting that is already over. It transcribes live while it records and has no audio or video upload, so it cannot read a past call or a finished file. It only helps for your next meeting.

How to get a transcript on a free Google account

Meet's captions appear on screen during the call. To keep them, Google's captions page describes only recording the meeting with captions on, and recording needs a paid plan too.

Reline does not use Meet's transcript feature, so your Google plan does not matter. Its desktop app records your microphone and the call audio on your computer, then transcribes them live in 60+ languages with automatic language detection. Nothing joins the call, and you need neither host rights nor a paid Workspace plan.

  1. Install the Reline desktop app on Windows, Mac or Linux (beta) and sign in. You can start on the Free plan.
  2. Allow the microphone, and on a Mac also allow system audio when macOS asks. Before macOS 13, only your microphone is recorded.
  3. Join the Meet call in your browser as usual.
  4. Tell everyone you are recording for notes, then press Record in Reline. The live transcript starts as people talk.
  5. Stop when the call ends. You get the transcript, an AI summary next to it and the kept audio, with a play button on every transcript line. To take the text elsewhere, use the Copy transcript button and paste it into a Doc.

Prefer not to install anything? Reline also runs in Chrome: open it in another tab, press Record and allow the microphone. When Reline says only your mic is being captured, click Allow, pick the Meet tab in Chrome's share window and keep tab audio sharing on. Reline keeps only the sound, not the picture.

Speaker names: the transcript is labeled Me vs Other (your microphone vs the call audio), and Reline does not read names from Google Meet. In a group call, open Who is on the other side beside the record button and choose Separate speakers (beta): Reline numbers each voice on the call side (an estimate), and you click a voice to name it yourself.

What Reline does not do

If you are on an eligible plan and the host is happy to start it, Meet's own transcript is the simpler choice: no extra app, and the Doc is already in Drive. Reline's limits:

  • It cannot transcribe a past meeting or a file: there is no audio or video upload, and transcription runs live while it records.
  • No video: Reline keeps audio and a transcript, not a screen recording. For video, use Meet's Record button if your plan has it.
  • No transcript file to download: copy the text with Copy transcript.
  • On Windows it records the whole default output, not one window, so other sounds on your PC are captured too.
  • Speakers are Me vs Other, with no names from Meet; the beta Separate speakers option only numbers voices for you to name.
  • No on-device AI: transcription, summaries and storage run in the cloud. Only the capture is local.
  • No mobile app, so it does not help on a phone.

Tell people you are recording

Meet's Transcripts icon only covers its own transcript. Reline puts no notice in the call, so the notice is on you. Several US states, California among them, require every party to agree before a call is recorded, and in the EU you need a lawful basis under the GDPR and should say why you record. Rules differ by country and state, so check the rules where everyone on the call is. The simple habit: say at the start of the call that you are recording for notes, and stop if someone objects.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I get a Google Meet transcript on a free account?
Not with Meet's own Transcripts feature: free personal Google accounts are not on Google's list of eligible plans. If a host on a paid plan starts one, ask them to share the Doc. Otherwise a recorder on your own computer, such as Reline, can transcribe your next call.
Where is my Google Meet transcript saved?
In the meeting organizer's Google Drive, in the Google Meet folder, with a subfolder for each meeting. The host, co-hosts and the person who started it also get an email link, and it is attached to the Calendar event.
How do I download a Google Meet transcript?
Open the transcript, which is a Google Docs file, click File, then Download, and choose a file type.
Can I get a Google Meet transcript after the meeting?
Only if it was running during the call: Google documents no way to create one afterward. If the meeting was recorded, the organizer can generate captions on the video in Drive and open its transcript there. Reline cannot help here, because it only transcribes live.
Why do I not see Transcribe in Google Meet?
Your plan may not include it, your admin may have turned it off, Host management may limit it to the host and co-hosts, or you may be on an iPhone or iPad, which Google's page does not list.
Does Google Meet tell people a transcript is running?
Yes. A Transcripts icon appears for everyone in the meeting, and if the host set it to start automatically, people joining get an on-screen warning. Reline adds no notice, so tell people yourself.
