How to Record Audio Only on Webex (2026)
Webex records video, not audio. Here are the three ways to end up with only the sound, and which one fits your role in the meeting.
In this article
Webex has no audio-only meeting recording: whether the host records to the cloud or to the computer, Webex saves an MP4 video. To get audio only, export the sound from that MP4 with an audio editor, record your computer's audio during the meeting, or use Reline, which records the call audio and transcribes it live with no bot.
Can you record audio only in Webex?
Not for meetings. Webex help says recordings saved to the cloud or to your computer are MP4, and its download page calls MP4 the standard format for all recordings. None of the recording pages lists an audio-only setting. The one exception is a different product: phone calls recorded with Webex Calling download from User Hub as MP3. Meetings and webinars always come as video.
Not everyone can press Record either. The host records; when the host is not in the meeting, a cohost takes the host role and can record. Attendees have to ask the host. Cloud recording needs a paid plan (Starter, Plus or Business; on Enterprise your site administrator decides). Recording on your computer is available on Free too, but only from the desktop app, and only if the site administrator allows local recording.
Option 1: record in Webex, then keep only the audio
- Join from the Webex desktop app and use Computer audio. Webex says a recording on your computer only has sound with Computer audio; if you joined with Call me or Call in, the audio is not recorded.
- Click Record and choose the option for your computer, or the cloud option on a paid plan, then click Record again. Stop when you are done.
- Find the file. A recording on your computer is an MP4 in your Documents folder on Windows or your Home folder on a Mac; on the Webex Suite meeting platform you pick the folder, or it goes to Downloads. A cloud recording appears in User Hub under Recordings, where you click Download (accept the disclaimer if one shows). Attendees ask the host for the link and the password, if there is one.
- Open the MP4 in an audio editor and export only the sound. In Audacity, the open-source audio editor, install its optional FFmpeg library first, then use File > Import > Audio and pick the MP4. The Audacity manual says FFmpeg imports the audio from most video files that are not DRM-protected. Then export the sound as MP3 or WAV from the File menu.
Recording to the cloud and only care about the sound? Webex lets you choose the screen layout of cloud recordings in your recording settings or during the meeting. One layout records a blank screen while nobody shares, another leaves participant video out while content is shared. The file is still an MP4, so step 4 stays the same. Layouts do not apply to recordings on your computer.
Any video editor or converter you already trust that can export audio does the same job; Webex's own help names FFmpeg as a conversion tool. Be careful with online converter sites: you would be uploading other people's voices to someone else's server.
Option 2: record only the audio on your computer
If you are an attendee, or recording is turned off for your site, record the sound your computer plays while the meeting runs. Two sources matter: the system audio (the other people) and your microphone (you). Many built-in recorders take only one of them.
- Windows 10 and 11: Audacity can record a WASAPI loopback of your speakers or headset, which is the other people's sound as audio only. Your own voice is a separate input, so record both with a tool that takes two sources, such as OBS Studio.
- Mac: the Screenshot toolbar (Shift-Command-5) can include system audio only from macOS 27, and it records video. On older macOS, use OBS Studio 30 or later (macOS 13 and later), or route the sound with BlackHole into Audacity.
Option 3: audio and a live transcript with Reline, no bot
Reline is the tool we make, so weigh our view accordingly. Its desktop app for Mac and Windows records your microphone and the sound your computer plays, and transcribes the meeting live as people talk, in 60+ languages. It records audio and a transcript, never video. No bot joins the Webex meeting, the participant list does not change, and you need neither the host role nor a paid Webex plan.
- Download Reline for Mac or Windows and sign in. The Free plan includes 10 hours of transcription.
- Allow the microphone, then system audio. On macOS 14.2 or later that is an audio-only permission; on macOS 13 to 14.1 it is the screen recording permission, often followed by a restart of Reline. Before macOS 13, a Mac records only your microphone.
- Join the Webex meeting as usual, in the Webex app or a browser tab, with Computer audio so the call plays through your computer.
- Press Record in Reline. The transcript appears as people talk.
- Stop when the meeting ends. You get the transcript, an AI summary and the kept audio, with a play button on every transcript line.
Know the limits. Reline transcribes live while it records: it cannot turn a Webex recording you already have into a transcript, and there is no file upload. The audio stays in the note for playback next to the transcript; if what you need is an audio file to keep or send, options 1 and 2 give you one. On the Free plan each note holds up to 1 hour of recording. Your voice and the call are labeled Me and Other; the beta Separate speakers option numbers the voices on the call side, and you name them yourself. Capture happens on your computer, but transcription, AI summaries and storage run in the cloud.
The three ways side by side
| Webex recording + export audio | Audio recorder on your computer | Reline | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who can use it | The host or a cohost; cloud needs a paid plan | Anyone on the computer | Anyone in the meeting, attendees included |
| What you get | An MP4, then an audio file you export | An audio or video file, depending on the tool | Audio and a live transcript, with an AI summary |
| Shows in the meeting | Yes, Webex shows it is recording | No notice | No bot and no Webex notice |
| Transcript | Cloud recordings on some plans | No | Yes, live, 60+ languages |
| Cost | Free for local recording, paid for cloud | Depends on the tool | Free plan: 10 hours of transcription |
Tell people you are recording
Webex itself says everyone in a meeting needs to give consent before it is recorded, summarized or transcribed, and its indicator only covers its own Record button. A recorder on your computer and Reline put no notice in the meeting, so the notice is on you. Several US states, California among them, require every party to agree before a call is recorded, and in the EU you need a lawful basis under the GDPR and should say why you record. Rules differ by country and state, so check the rules where everyone on the call is. The simple habit: say at the start of the meeting that you are recording for notes, and stop if someone objects.

Common questions
- Can I record only audio in a Webex meeting?
- Not with Webex's own recording. Cloud and computer recordings are saved as MP4 video, and Webex help lists no audio-only setting. Export the sound from the MP4 with an audio editor, or record audio on your computer.
- How do I get the audio from a Webex recording?
- Download the MP4 from User Hub under Recordings, or find it in your Documents or Home folder for a recording on your computer. Open it in Audacity with its FFmpeg library (File > Import > Audio) and export MP3 or WAV.
- Why does my Webex recording have no sound?
- Webex says a recording on your computer only includes audio when you join with Computer audio. If you chose Call me or Call in, the audio is not recorded.
- Can Webex save a recording as MP3?
- Only for phone calls recorded with Webex Calling: those download from User Hub as MP3. Meeting and webinar recordings are MP4.
- Can an attendee record Webex audio?
- Not with Webex's Record button: attendees ask the host. Recording your computer's sound or using Reline works without the host role, and then telling the others is on you.
- Can Reline transcribe an old Webex recording?
- No. Reline transcribes live while it records and has no file upload. For a past meeting, use Webex's own recording transcripts if your plan has them; Reline helps from your next meeting on.
