How to Record a Webex Meeting on Mac (2026)
How to record a Webex meeting on your Mac
In this article
To record a Webex meeting on a Mac, the host (or a cohost standing in) clicks Record and saves it to the computer or the cloud. Attendees cannot record and must ask the host. Without host rights, Reline's Mac app records your microphone and the Webex audio locally, with no bot in the call; transcription runs in the cloud.
Who can record a Webex meeting?
Webex ties recording to your role and your plan. Its help center says the host records, a cohost takes over the host role (and the Record button) when the host is not in the meeting, and invited attendees should ask the host. Recording to the cloud needs a paid Webex plan. Recording on your computer is available on the Free, Starter, Plus and Business plans, and on Enterprise it is whatever your site administrator configured. If the Record button is missing or greyed out, Webex's advice is that recording may not be enabled, so ask your administrator.
| Your role | Webex Record button | Reline on Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Host | Yes: computer, or cloud on a paid plan | Yes |
| Cohost | Yes, as stand-in host (cloud needs a paid plan) | Yes |
| Attendee or guest | No, Webex says to ask the host | Yes, audio and transcript |
Option 1: Webex's own Record button on a Mac
- Join from the Webex desktop app for Mac. On the Free plan, Webex says recording works only from the desktop app.
- Use Computer audio for the meeting. Webex notes this audio option is needed to capture sound in a recording on your computer.
- Click Record and choose the option for your computer, or the cloud option if your paid plan allows it. Then click Record again.
- Use Pause and Resume to keep one file, and Stop when you are done. A recording indicator shows at the top right of the Webex window.
- Find the file. Recordings on your computer are saved as MP4. Webex help gives your Home folder as the Mac default (open Finder, then Go, then Home); on the Webex Suite meeting platform you choose the folder, or it goes to Downloads. Cloud recordings go to your Webex site, and the host gets an email.
A recording on your computer keeps participant audio, video and shared content, but not the chat, the participants panel or transcripts. Webex also states that everyone in the meeting needs to consent before it is recorded, summarized or transcribed.
Option 2: the macOS screen recorder (and its audio catch)
Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot toolbar and record the Webex window. The catch is sound. Apple's own guide lets you pick a microphone under Options, and the Include System Audio choice exists only in macOS 27 or later. On older macOS versions the recording has your voice from the microphone but not the other people in the call, unless their audio happens to leak from your speakers into the mic. You also get a video file with no transcript.
Option 3: record Webex on a Mac without host rights, with Reline
If you are an attendee, your company disabled recording, or you only want notes, record your Mac instead of the meeting. Reline's Mac app records two local streams: your microphone and the system audio, which is everyone else on the Webex call. Nothing joins the meeting, so it works the same in the Webex app or in a browser tab.
- Download Reline for Mac and sign in. You can start on the Free plan.
- Allow the microphone and system audio recording when macOS asks. You can change both later in System Settings, under Privacy and Security. Headphones are fine: the capture reads what your Mac plays, not what your speakers emit.
- Join the Webex meeting as usual, in the Webex app or a browser tab, and switch to Reline as the call begins.
- Press Record. The live transcript starts as people talk, in 60+ languages with automatic language detection.
- Stop when the meeting ends. You get the transcript, an AI summary next to it and the kept audio, with a play button on every transcript line.
What Reline does not do
- No video and no screen recording: Reline keeps audio, a transcript and a summary.
- Speakers are labeled Me vs Other (your microphone vs the call audio). It does not read Webex participant names.
- No on-device AI: only the capture is local. Transcription, summaries and storage run in the cloud.
- It does not replace the Webex cloud recording your team may need for compliance or for people who missed the call.
Tell people you are recording
A local recorder shows no indicator in Webex, so telling people is on you. Several US states, California among them, require every party to agree before a call is recorded, and in the EU you need a lawful basis under the GDPR and should say why you record. Rules differ by country and state, so check the rules where everyone on the call is. The simple habit: say at the start that you are recording for notes, and stop if someone objects.
Common questions
- Can I record a Webex meeting if I am not the host?
- Not with Webex's Record button: the host records, or a cohost when the host is absent, and attendees are told to ask the host. A local recorder such as Reline for Mac records your mic and the call audio from your own computer. Tell the others first.
- Where are Webex recordings saved on a Mac?
- Recordings on your computer are MP4 files. Webex help gives your Home folder as the Mac default (Finder, Go, Home); on the Webex Suite meeting platform you choose the folder, or it goes to Downloads. If in doubt, check both. Cloud recordings are stored on your Webex site, and the host receives an email about them.
- Can I record a Webex meeting on the free plan?
- Yes, on your computer only. Webex lists cloud recording as not available on the Free plan and says free users can record only from the desktop app.
- Does macOS screen recording capture Webex audio?
- Only on macOS 27 or later, with Include System Audio under Options. On earlier versions the Shift-Command-5 recorder takes sound from a microphone, so the other people in the call are missing.
- Does Webex notify people when Reline records?
- No. Reline does not join the meeting, so Webex shows no recording indicator. That is why you should say you are recording at the start of the call.
- Does Reline record Webex video?
- No. Reline records audio and builds a transcript and summary. For video, use the Webex Record button if your role and plan allow it.
