To record Google Voice calls on a computer, open voice.google.com, go to Settings, Calls, turn on Incoming call options, then press 4 during an incoming call. Everyone hears an announcement. Workspace users click Record if their license allows it. Google describes nothing for outgoing calls on personal accounts: Reline records your mic and computer audio, with a transcript. Tell people first.

Can Google Voice calls be recorded?

Yes, with limits that depend on your account. On a personal Google account, Google's help describes recording an incoming call only, started with the 4 key once everyone is on the call. On a work or school account managed by Google Workspace, you need the appropriate Google Voice license, and then you can record on demand, or your admin can record calls automatically. Every built-in method announces the recording to everyone on the call.

Record incoming Google Voice calls on a personal account

  1. On your computer, go to voice.google.com and use Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari: Google says you need one of these to call from a computer.
  2. Click Settings at the top right, then Calls on the left, and turn on Incoming call options.
  3. Answer an incoming call to your Google Voice number. Wait until everyone is on the call.
  4. Press 4 on the dialpad to start. Everyone hears an announcement that the call is being recorded.
  5. Press 4 again to stop, or hang up. Everyone hears that the recording ended.
  6. Find the recording in the Calls tab. To save it to your computer, open the menu at the end of the call record and download it.

Google Workspace accounts: Record button and automatic recording

  • On demand: during a call, click Record. Voice tells everyone the recording started. Click Stop recording, or hang up, to end it. Google says manual recording is available on all paid Voice services, as long as you have the appropriate license.
  • Automatic: an admin can set all calls to be recorded. Voice then announces it at the start of each call, and recording pauses while a call is on hold. Google lists automatic recording for the Voice for Google Workspace Premier subscription only, and admins reach those recordings through Vault.
  • Do not see a Record button? Ask your Workspace admin which Voice license you have and whether recording is turned on for you.

How to record outgoing Google Voice calls

Google's Record calls page describes a way to record incoming calls on a personal account and says nothing about outgoing calls. So for a call you place from a personal account, Google's help describes no built-in option. You have two routes: a Workspace account whose license lets you click Record, or a recorder on your computer that captures both sides of the call as it plays.

Record any Google Voice call on your computer with Reline

When you call from voice.google.com or from the Voice panel in Gmail, the other person comes out of your computer's speakers or headset, and you go in through its microphone. Reline is the tool we make, so weigh our view accordingly. Its desktop app for Mac and Windows records your microphone and the sound your computer plays, locally, and transcribes the call live as people talk. That works for incoming and outgoing calls, on a personal or a Workspace account, without Google's recorder.

  1. Download the Reline app for Mac or Windows and sign in. You can start on the Free plan, which includes 10 hours of transcription.
  2. Allow the microphone, and on a Mac allow system audio too (see the table below).
  3. Put on a headset if you can: it keeps the other side out of your microphone, so the Me vs Other labels stay clean.
  4. Place or answer the call at voice.google.com and ask whether you may record for notes. Once you hear a yes, press Record in Reline. The live transcript starts as people talk, in 60+ languages with automatic language detection.
  5. Stop when you hang up. You get the transcript, an AI summary next to it, and the kept audio, with a play button on every transcript line.
Your computerWhat Reline needs for the call audio
Mac, macOS 14.2 or laterThe system audio permission only (audio, not your screen). One prompt; if you refuse, Reline opens the right System Settings pane.
Mac, macOS 13 to 14.1The screen recording permission, in System Settings > Privacy & Security. macOS often needs Reline restarted after you switch it on.
Mac, before macOS 13No system audio capture, so only your microphone is recorded. Update macOS first.
WindowsMicrophone access for desktop apps, and the call playing on your Windows default output device (see the note below).

Speaker names: the transcript is labeled Me vs Other (your microphone vs the call audio), and Reline does not read names from Google Voice. On a conference call, open Who is on the other side beside the record button and choose Separate speakers (beta): Reline numbers each voice on the call side (an estimate), and you click a voice to name it yourself.

Cannot install anything on a work computer? Reline also runs in Chrome. It hears your microphone at once, and you share the Google Voice tab with its audio to capture the other side.

Where Reline does not fit

  • Calls on your phone: if you take the Google Voice call in the mobile app, or it rings on a phone, your computer hears nothing. Reline has no mobile app.
  • It does not transcribe Google's recordings: Reline transcribes live while it records and has no audio or video upload, so a recording you downloaded from the Calls tab needs a tool that transcribes files.
  • It records all the sound your computer plays, not one tab, so pause music and notification sounds before you press Record.
  • It does not detect Google Voice calls on its own: you press Record yourself.
  • No speaker names from Google Voice: the beta Separate speakers option only numbers voices for you to name.
  • No on-device AI: transcription, summaries and storage run in the cloud. Only the capture is local.

Tell the other person before you record

Google's own recorder announces itself, and its help page adds that recording calls without the consent of all call participants may not be legal in some jurisdictions. A recorder on your computer, Reline included, plays no announcement, so the notice is on you. Several US states, California among them, require every party to agree before a call is recorded, and in the EU you need a lawful basis under the GDPR and should say why you record. Rules differ by country and state, so check the rules where everyone on the call is. The simple habit: say at the start of the call that you are recording for notes, and stop if someone objects.

FAQ

Common questions

Can Google Voice calls be recorded?
Yes. Personal accounts can record incoming calls by pressing 4 after turning on Incoming call options. Workspace users with the appropriate Voice license can click Record, and on the Premier subscription an admin can record calls automatically. Each method announces the recording to everyone on the call.
How do I record outgoing Google Voice calls?
Google's help describes no built-in way for a personal account. With a Workspace license that allows it, click Record during the call. Otherwise, use a recorder on your computer such as Reline, which captures your microphone and the call audio, and tell the other person first.
How do I record incoming calls on Google Voice on a computer?
Go to voice.google.com, click Settings, then Calls, and turn on Incoming call options. Answer the call, wait until everyone is on it, and press 4 on the dialpad. Press 4 again to stop. The recording appears in the Calls tab.
Does Google Voice tell the other person when you record?
Yes. Google Voice announces the recording to everyone when it starts and when it stops, and automatic recordings are announced at the start of each call. A recorder on your computer plays no announcement, so you have to tell people yourself.
Where do Google Voice recordings go?
In the Calls tab of Google Voice. To keep a copy on your computer, open the menu at the end of the call record and download it. Automatic Workspace recordings are reached by admins through Vault.
Can I get a transcript of a Google Voice call?
Reline transcribes the call live while it records your microphone and computer audio, in 60+ languages. It cannot transcribe a recording you already downloaded from Google Voice, because it has no file upload.
