A cellular call on your phone and a call on your computer need different tools. Here is which one does what, honestly.

The best AI note taker for phone calls depends on where the call runs. For a cellular call, use your phone's built-in recorder (iPhone's Phone app outside the EU, Google or Samsung Phone on Android) or a Plaud Note on the back of the phone. For calls on your computer, such as Zoom Phone, Teams or WhatsApp Desktop, use a desktop recorder like Reline.

On an iPhone: start with the Phone app

Since iOS 18, the iPhone Phone app can record a call with one other person. During the call you tap the more button, then Call Recording, and both people hear an audio notice. The recording lands in a Call Recordings folder in Notes, with a transcript in select regions and languages, and a summary if your iPhone has Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 and later). Apple's list of places where call recording is not available includes the European Union, so this route does not exist for anyone with an EU iPhone.

Third-party apps mostly cannot hear a cellular call on an iPhone. Granola works around it with its own dialer: you call from inside Granola, the other person sees your normal number, and notes arrive after the call. Its docs say incoming calls are not supported and the Android app does not do phone calls. Jamie says plainly that it cannot record cellular calls on iOS.

On Android: the Phone app, then Call Notes or Transcript assist

Google's Phone app records calls on Android 9 and later (Pixel 6 and later on Android 14), in the countries where Google supports it. Both sides get a disclosure when recording starts and stops, and the file stays on the phone. On a Pixel 9 or later (not the A series), Call Notes adds a transcript and a summary of important points and next steps, in English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK and the US, in Japanese in Japan, and on the Pixel 10 in India. Summaries are English only.

Samsung phones on One UI 7 or later have a Record button in the dialer and Transcript assist for transcripts and summaries. You need a Samsung account and an internet connection, and Samsung lists the Galaxy A56, A36, A26 and A17 as models without transcripts and summaries.

Want one tool for every phone? A hardware recorder

Plaud Note is a card-sized recorder that sits on the back of the phone in a magnetic case and picks up the call through a vibration conduction sensor, so it works whatever phone or country you are in. It costs $159 and the free Starter plan includes 300 minutes of AI transcription a month. The trade-off: it adds a device to carry and charge, and it gives the other side no automatic notice.

Otter takes a different route. It says Apple and Google restrict third-party apps from recording calls directly, so you record with the phone's built-in recorder and share the file to Otter. The free Basic plan allows only 3 imported files in total, with 30 minutes per conversation.

Calls on your computer: where Reline fits

Many business calls no longer run on a handset. Zoom Phone, RingCentral, Dialpad, Aircall and 8x8 run in a desktop app or a browser tab, and so do calls in Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp Desktop and Signal Desktop. If the call plays through your computer, Reline records it: the audio your machine plays plus your microphone, captured on your own device, with no bot and no dial-in recorder. Transcription, AI and storage run in the cloud.

  1. Take the call on your computer, in the desktop app or a browser dialer.
  2. Open Reline and start recording before you dial or answer.
  3. Talk normally. The live transcript separates your voice from the other side of the call, in 60+ languages.
  4. Stop recording to get an AI summary next to the kept recording, so you can press play on any transcript line.

What Reline does not do

  • It does not record a cellular call on your phone, and there is no Reline app for iPhone or Android.
  • Putting the phone on speaker next to your laptop records a room, not a call: both voices reach the microphone, so Reline cannot separate you from the other side, and the far voice is only as clear as the phone speaker.

Recording a call is treated more strictly than taking notes in many places. The built-in recorders from Apple, Google and Samsung announce themselves to the other side. A hardware recorder, a third-party dialer or a desktop recorder adds no beep, so telling people is your job. This is general information, not legal advice:

  • United States: federal law (18 U.S.C. 2511(2)(d)) allows recording when one party consents, but several states, such as California (Penal Code 632), require every party to agree to record a confidential call. With a caller in another state, the stricter rule is the safe default.
  • Germany: recording someone's non-public spoken words without permission can be a criminal offence (Section 201 of the Criminal Code), and data protection law (GDPR) can apply to recordings of identifiable people.
  • Everywhere: ask at the start. "I would like to record this call so I can take notes. Is that OK?" takes five seconds and is on the recording.

How to choose

  • Cellular calls on an iPhone outside the EU: the Phone app, free and announced to both sides.
  • Cellular calls on a recent Pixel or Galaxy: the Phone app with Call Notes or Transcript assist.
  • Cellular calls in the EU, or across several phones: a hardware recorder such as Plaud Note.
  • Outgoing iPhone calls you want to turn into notes straight away: Granola's dialer.
  • Calls on your computer, plus video meetings, in one notes app your team shares: Reline.
FAQ

Common questions

Can an AI note taker record phone calls on my iPhone?
Yes, with the Phone app's own Call Recording on iOS 18 or later, where Apple offers it (not in the EU). The transcript goes to Notes and a summary needs Apple Intelligence. Most third-party apps cannot hear a cellular call; Granola works only for outgoing calls placed from its own dialer.
Is there a free AI note taker for phone calls?
The recorders built into iPhone, Google and Samsung phones cost nothing extra where they are available. Otter's free Basic plan transcribes imported calls, but only 3 files in total. Plaud's Starter plan is free, but the Plaud Note itself costs $159. For calls on your computer, Reline has a free plan.
Can Reline record calls on my cell phone?
No. Reline has no mobile app and records only audio that plays through the computer it runs on. Take the same call in a desktop app or a browser dialer and Reline records it.
Will the other person know the call is recorded?
With the built-in recorders from Apple, Google and Samsung, yes: they play a notice. Hardware recorders, third-party dialers and desktop recorders do not, so tell people at the start and get their agreement.
Why can most apps not record phone calls?
Apple and Google limit third-party access to call audio. That is why Otter asks you to import a recording from the built-in recorder, Granola places the call itself, and Plaud picks up sound through the phone case instead of software.
