Short answer: Messenger does not offer a call recording feature. Since Meta retired the Messenger desktop apps (December 2025) and messenger.com (April 2026), PC calls run on facebook.com/messages in your browser. To record one, run a desktop recorder that captures your microphone and system audio, such as Reline, and ask everyone first.

Can you still make Messenger calls on a PC?

Yes, in a browser. Meta shut down the Messenger desktop apps for Windows and Mac on December 15, 2025, and the standalone messenger.com site in April 2026. Meta's help center says messenger.com now sends you to facebook.com/messages for messaging on a computer, and Meta keeps a help page on the browsers that support video calling on Facebook. If you use Messenger without a Facebook account, Meta says you can continue only on the mobile app, so there is no PC call to record.

Does Messenger have a call recorder?

No. Meta's help center covers starting voice and video calls and fixing your camera, microphone and speakers, and it describes no option to record a call. Messenger's option to leave a voice or video message when someone misses your call does not record the call itself. Any recording of a Messenger call on a PC comes from software on your computer.

What you need to record a Messenger call

  • A Facebook account and an up-to-date desktop browser, signed in at facebook.com/messages. Check Meta's help center page on the browsers that support video calling on Facebook.
  • A recorder that captures system audio (the other side) as well as your microphone (your side). Reline's desktop app does this on Windows, macOS and Linux (beta).
  • Headphones, ideally. On open speakers your microphone also hears the other side, and some of their words can land on your side of the transcript.
  • The other person's yes, or the group's.

How to record a Messenger call on a Windows PC

  1. Open facebook.com/messages in your browser and sign in. Allow the microphone, and the camera for video calls, when the browser asks.
  2. Install the Reline desktop app for Windows and sign in. The Free plan is enough to start.
  3. Allow the microphone for Reline: in Windows 11, open Settings, Privacy & security, Microphone, and turn on "Let desktop apps access your microphone".
  4. Keep the call on your Windows default output device. Reline records everything that device plays, so the other side is missed if the call plays somewhere else, and music or notification sounds on it are recorded too.
  5. Open the conversation and start or answer the voice or video call. When the browser starts using your microphone, Reline can show a prompt to record; it shows up as a browser meeting, not as Messenger.
  6. Ask at the start of the call whether you may record for notes. Once you hear a clear yes, press Record in the prompt or in Reline.
  7. Stop the recording when you hang up. You get the transcript, an AI summary and the kept audio, with a play button on every transcript line.

How to record a Messenger call on a Mac

  1. Open facebook.com/messages in your browser and sign in. Allow the microphone and camera when the browser asks; macOS may also ask you to allow the browser.
  2. Install the Reline desktop app for Mac and sign in.
  3. Allow the microphone when macOS asks, then allow system audio. On macOS 14.2 and later this is an audio-only permission; on macOS 13 to 14.1 Reline uses the screen and system audio permission, which can need an app restart. Before macOS 13, only your microphone is recorded.
  4. Start or answer the call. Reline can offer to record when the browser starts using the microphone. Ask for consent first, then press Record.
  5. Stop when you hang up and open the note for the transcript, summary and audio.

How to record a Messenger call on Linux

Sign in at facebook.com/messages in your browser and use Reline's Linux desktop app (beta), which records your microphone and system audio through PulseAudio or PipeWire. The steps match Windows. If the transcript only shows your side, check that your output device is not muted: a muted output gives Reline silence.

Xbox Game Bar (Windows key + G)An MP4 video of the browser windowSet the capture audio to all sounds or the other side is missing; no transcript
Snipping Tool (Windows 11)A video of an area of the screenPC audio and microphone are options since version 11.2307.44.0; no transcript

A recorder on your computer shows nothing in the Messenger call, so nobody knows unless you say so: the notice is on you. Several US states, California among them, require every party to agree before a call is recorded, and in the EU you need a lawful basis under the GDPR and should say why you record. Rules differ by country and state, so check the rules where everyone on the call is. The simple habit: say at the start of the call that you are recording for notes, and stop if someone objects.

Where Reline fits, and where it does not

  • Fits: one-to-one and group Messenger calls you take at facebook.com/messages on Windows, Mac or Linux (beta), when everyone agrees and you want a searchable transcript in 60+ languages plus a summary.
  • Audio and transcript only: Reline does not record the video or a shared screen.
  • Speaker labels are Me vs Other (your microphone vs the call audio). In a group call everyone else is "Other"; Reline cannot name Messenger participants.
  • Not for calls on your phone: there is no Reline mobile app.
  • Not local-only: audio goes to a cloud transcription provider, audio and notes are stored in cloud storage (Cloudflare R2), and summaries and chat use cloud AI models. Notes are private by default.
  • If everything must stay on your machine, an offline recorder with a local transcription model is the better match.

Recording WhatsApp and Telegram calls too

The same setup works for other calling apps that no notetaker bot can join. WhatsApp and Telegram still have desktop apps, each with its own quirks around recording.

FAQ

Common questions

Can you record Messenger calls on a PC?
Yes, with software on your computer. Messenger does not offer a call recording feature, and PC calls now run on facebook.com/messages in a browser. A recorder that captures your microphone and system audio, such as Reline's desktop app, records both sides. Ask everyone first.
Is there still a Messenger app for Windows or Mac?
No. Meta shut down the Messenger desktop apps on December 15, 2025, and the standalone messenger.com site in April 2026. On a computer, Meta sends you to facebook.com/messages in a browser, which needs a Facebook account.
Does Messenger notify the other person if I record a call?
A recorder running on your computer shows nothing in the Messenger call, so the other person only knows if you tell them. Ask at the start and stop if they object.
Can I record a Messenger video call with the video?
Reline records the audio and gives you a transcript and a summary, not the video. For a video file, use Xbox Game Bar or Snipping Tool on Windows, the Screenshot toolbar on a Mac (system audio only on macOS 27 or later), or OBS Studio.
Can I record a Messenger call on my phone with Reline?
No. Reline has desktop apps for Windows, macOS and Linux (beta) plus a web app, and no mobile app. Take the call at facebook.com/messages on your computer and record it there.
Is a Reline recording still end-to-end encrypted?
No. Messenger's end-to-end encryption protects the call itself. Once Reline captures the audio, it is sent to a cloud transcription provider and stored in Reline's cloud storage, outside Messenger.
