Google documents no Record button for Google Chat's direct calls or huddles; its recording help covers Google Meet meetings on eligible Workspace plans. To record a Chat call on a computer, run a recorder that captures your microphone and the call audio, such as Reline's desktop app or Reline in Chrome, and ask everyone first.

Three ways to talk in Google Chat

Google Chat, at chat.google.com or in the Chat section of Gmail, gives you three ways to talk. They work differently, and that decides how you can record.

In ChatHow you start itWhere it runsGood to know
Video meetingAdd video meeting in the reply box, then sendA regular Google Meet meetingMeet's own recording rules apply
Direct callStart video call at the top of a direct messageA small call window in Chat; Move to a tab gives it its own tabThe other person hears a ring if they use Chrome
HuddleThe dropdown arrow at the top right of a conversation, then HuddlesA huddle window in Chat, voice first; Open Meet in tab moves it to MeetWork accounts only, and nobody is rung

Google says huddles are powered by Google Meet. They start as voice only; you can turn on your camera or share your screen with Present now. A huddle stays open while people are in it, and others can join from the invitation chip in the conversation as long as the person who started it is still there. If your admin turned Meet off for you, you can join a huddle but not start one.

Does Google Chat have a record button?

Not one that Google documents for direct calls or huddles. Google's huddle help describes the camera, screen sharing, visual effects and reactions, its call help covers starting, moving and ending a call, and neither mentions recording. Google's recording help is written for Google Meet meetings, and it has conditions: an eligible plan (Business Standard or Plus, Enterprise editions, Essentials, Education Plus for staff, the Teaching and Learning Upgrade, Workspace Individual, or Google One with 2 TB or more), an admin who allows recording, and a host with the permission. Free personal accounts are not on that list, and huddles are not available to personal or school accounts at all.

If you need Google's own recording

  1. In the chat, click Add video meeting in the reply box and send it, so everyone joins a regular Meet meeting instead of a call or a huddle.
  2. In the meeting, click Meeting tools at the bottom right, then Recording, then Start recording, and confirm with Start. Everyone is notified when recording starts and stops.
  3. When the meeting ends, the recording goes to the organizer's Google Drive, in the Google Meet folder, and the organizer and the person who started it get an email with the link.

Google does not say whether Record appears after you open a huddle or a direct call in a Meet tab. If your plan includes recording and you see it there, Meet's usual rules apply. Gemini's Take notes for me is the same story: Google describes it for Meet meetings and does not mention huddles or Chat calls.

What you need to record a Google Chat call

Notetaker bots that join from your calendar have nothing to join here: a direct call or a huddle starts from a chat, with no calendar event. Recording it means recording what your computer plays and hears.

  • A computer. Take the call in Chat or Gmail on your computer, not on your phone: Reline has no mobile app.
  • A recorder that captures the call audio (the other side) as well as your microphone (your side). Reline's desktop app does this on Windows, macOS and Linux (beta), and Reline in Chrome does it while you share the call's tab.
  • Headphones, ideally. On open speakers your microphone also hears the other side, and some of their words can land on your side of the transcript.
  • Everyone's yes, before you press Record.

How to record a Google Chat call with the Reline desktop app

  1. Install the Reline desktop app for Windows, Mac or Linux (beta) and sign in. The Free plan is enough to start.
  2. Allow the microphone. On Windows 11, open Settings, Privacy & security, Microphone, and turn on "Let desktop apps access your microphone". On a Mac, allow the microphone when macOS asks, then allow system audio.
  3. Open Google Chat or Gmail in your browser and start or join the direct call or huddle. When the browser starts using your microphone, Reline can show a prompt to record; it names a browser meeting (or Google Meet, once the call is in a Meet tab), never Google Chat.
  4. Say that you would like to record for notes. Once everyone agrees, press Record in the prompt or in Reline.
  5. Stop when the call ends. You get a live transcript in 60+ languages, an AI summary and the kept audio, with a play button on every transcript line.

What changes on Windows, Mac and Linux

  • Windows: Reline records everything your default output device plays, not only the call. Wear a headset, make it the Windows default output, and mute music and notification sounds, or they end up in the recording.
  • Mac: on macOS 14.2 and later, system audio is an audio-only permission; on macOS 13 to 14.1 Reline uses the screen and system audio permission, which can need an app restart. Before macOS 13, only your microphone is recorded.
  • Linux (beta): Reline records your microphone and system audio through PulseAudio or PipeWire. If the transcript only shows your side, check that your output device is not muted: a muted output gives Reline silence.

How to record a Google Chat call in Chrome, with nothing to install

Reline also runs in the browser. It hears your microphone at once; to hear the other side, you share the tab the call plays in, with its audio.

  1. Start or join the call in Chat, then give it its own tab: Move to a tab for a direct call, Open Meet in tab for a huddle. If you keep the small call window, you will pick the Chat or Gmail tab instead.
  2. Open Reline in another Chrome tab, sign in and press Record. Allow the microphone when Chrome asks. Reline starts with your microphone only.
  3. When Reline says only your mic is being captured, click Allow. In Chrome's share window, pick the tab with the call and keep tab audio sharing on. Reline then records the call audio too, in the same note, and keeps only the sound, not the picture.
  4. Leave the call in that tab until you stop: if the call moves to another tab, its sound leaves the tab Reline hears.
  5. Press Stop in Reline when the call ends.

Prefer not to share a tab? The desktop app records the call audio with no sharing step.

Tell people you are recording

Meet's notice only covers its own recording. A recorder on your computer shows nothing in a Chat call or huddle, so nobody knows unless you say so: the notice is on you. Several US states, California among them, require every party to agree before a call is recorded, and in the EU you need a lawful basis under the GDPR and should say why you record. Rules differ by country and state, so check the rules where everyone on the call is. The simple habit: say at the start of the call that you are recording for notes, and stop if someone objects.

Huddles are a work-account feature, so check your company's policy on recording colleagues too.

Where Reline fits, and where it does not

  • Fits: direct calls and huddles you take in Google Chat or Gmail on a computer, and Meet meetings started from a chat, when everyone agrees and you want a transcript in 60+ languages plus a summary.
  • Audio and transcript only: Reline does not record the video or a shared screen.
  • Speaker labels are Me vs Other (your microphone vs the call audio). In a group huddle, the beta Separate speakers option, under Who is on the other side next to the record button, numbers the voices on the call side. The numbers are an estimate, and you name each voice yourself.
  • You press Record yourself: Reline sees a browser using the microphone, not a Google Chat call by name.
  • Not for calls on your phone: there is no Reline mobile app.
  • Not local-only: audio goes to a cloud transcription provider, audio and notes are stored in cloud storage (Cloudflare R2), and summaries and chat use cloud AI models. Notes are private by default.

More on Google Meet and huddles

If the chat turns into a regular Meet meeting, these guides cover it on each computer. Slack has huddles too.

FAQ

Common questions

Can you record a Google Chat call?
Not with a Record button that Google documents for direct calls or huddles. Google's recording covers Meet meetings on eligible plans. On a computer, a recorder that captures your microphone and the call audio, such as Reline, records both sides. Ask everyone first.
Can you record a huddle in Google Chat?
Google's huddle help lists the camera, screen sharing, effects and reactions, and no recording. Reline's desktop app records a huddle from your computer's sound and your microphone, with no bot. Tell everyone first.
Can I use huddles with a personal Gmail account?
No. Google says only work accounts can use huddles in Google Chat; personal and school accounts cannot.
Does Google Chat tell others if I record?
Meet's own recording notifies everyone. A recorder on your computer shows nothing in a Chat call or huddle, so tell people yourself and stop if someone objects.
Where do Meet recordings started from a chat go?
To the organizer's Google Drive, in the Google Meet folder. The organizer and the person who started the recording get an email with the link.
Can Reline record the video of a Google Chat call?
No. Reline records the audio and gives you a transcript and an AI summary. For video, use Meet recording, Xbox Game Bar or Snipping Tool on Windows, or the Screenshot toolbar on a Mac (system audio only on macOS 27 or later).
