Short answer: Slack has no button that records a huddle. Paid plans offer AI huddle notes (a canvas with takeaways, action items and a transcript), not an audio file. To record a Slack huddle on a Mac, use an app that records your Mac's audio: Reline (reline.so) records both sides (system audio plus your microphone), then transcribes and summarizes. Tell everyone first.

Does Slack record huddles?

Not as a recording. Slack's help center describes huddles, notes, captions and AI notes, and none of them saves the huddle's audio or video as a file you can replay. Here is what Slack itself offers, as described on its help pages in October 2026:

Slack featureWhat it gives youLimits Slack lists
Huddle thread and canvasA thread and a canvas for notes, links and files you add by handOnly what people type
AI huddle notesA canvas with takeaways, action items and the transcript embeddedPaid plans (Pro, Business+, Enterprise+); not in huddles with external people or guests; everyone is notified when notes start or stop
Live captionsCaptions during the huddleEnglish only; not saved after the huddle ends
ClipsAudio or video clips you record and post in a channel or DMUp to five minutes; Slack does not describe them as a way to record a huddle

On the free plan a huddle holds at most two people, and AI notes are not available. So if you want to replay what someone said, keep the audio with the notes, or record a huddle with people from another company over Slack Connect, you need a recorder on your own computer.

What the Mac's screen recorder gets from a huddle

The obvious tool is the Screenshot toolbar (Shift-Command-5). Apple says its Include System Audio option, which records the sound the Mac plays, needs macOS 27 or later. Before macOS 27, the only audio option Apple lists is a microphone, so a screen recording of a huddle picks up your own voice but not what Slack plays through your speakers. Either way you get a video file with no transcript and no notes. A huddle recorder for Mac has to read system audio as well as your microphone.

How to record a Slack huddle on a Mac with Reline

  1. Install the Reline desktop app for Mac and sign in. The Free plan is enough to start.
  2. Allow microphone access when macOS asks. Reline reads system audio through a Core Audio tap, so there is no Screen Recording prompt.
  3. Start or join the huddle in the Slack app as usual. When Slack starts using your microphone, Reline can show a "Slack Huddle" card with a Take Notes button; you can also press record in Reline yourself.
  4. Say at the start that you are recording for notes, and stop if someone objects.
  5. Stop the recording when the huddle ends. You get the transcript, an AI summary next to it and the kept audio, with a play button on each transcript line.

Reline records the Mac, not Slack, so it works the same in a channel huddle, a DM huddle or a Slack Connect huddle with another company, and on any plan where you can join the huddle.

If your team already relies on AI huddle notes and every huddle is internal, they may be all you need. Reline fits when you want the audio, when guests or another company are in the huddle, or when you want one place for huddles, Zoom calls and Google Meet calls alike.

What Reline does not do in a huddle

  • No video and no screen shares: Reline keeps audio and a transcript.
  • No names on the speakers: the labels are Me vs Other, taken from which stream the audio came in on. Names come only from the browser extension for Google Meet, Teams and Zoom on the web, not Slack.
  • No huddles on your phone: Reline has desktop apps for Mac, Windows and Linux (beta) plus a web app, and no mobile app.
  • No offline processing: the capture is local, but transcription, summaries and storage run in the cloud.

On Windows, Reline records the whole default output device, so a huddle routed to another device is missed and other sounds on that device are recorded. On Linux the desktop app is in beta and records your microphone plus system audio through PulseAudio or PipeWire.

Slack notifies everyone when AI notes start. A recorder on your Mac puts no notice in Slack, so the notice is on you. Several US states, California among them, require every party to agree before a call is recorded, and in the EU you need a lawful basis under the GDPR and should say why you record. Rules differ by country and state, so check the rules where everyone on the call is, and check your company policy on recording internal calls. The simple habit: say at the start of the huddle that you are recording for notes, and stop if someone objects.

FAQ

Common questions

Does Slack record huddles?
No. Slack's help pages describe no audio or video recording of a huddle. Paid plans offer AI huddle notes, a canvas with takeaways, action items and an embedded transcript, and live captions are English only and are not saved.
Can you record a Slack huddle on a Mac?
Yes, with a recorder that captures your Mac's system audio and your microphone. Before macOS 27, the Screenshot toolbar records only a microphone, so it misses the other people; from macOS 27 it can include system audio, but you get a video file with no transcript. Reline records both sides and gives you a transcript and a summary.
Does Slack notify others if I record a huddle?
Slack notifies everyone when AI notes start, stop or are canceled. A recorder on your own Mac does not appear in Slack at all, so you have to tell people yourself before you record.
Can I record a huddle with external people or guests?
Slack AI notes do not work in huddles with external people or guests. Reline records the audio your Mac plays, so it works in a Slack Connect huddle too. Get everyone’s consent first.
Does Reline record the video or screen share of a huddle?
No. Reline records audio and a transcript only. Speakers are labeled Me vs Other, not by name.
Is the huddle audio processed on my Mac?
Only the capture is local. Transcription, AI summaries and storage run in the cloud.
