AI Notetaker Slack Sharing Controls: Limit What Gets Posted

The recap is useful in Slack. The whole meeting usually is not.

Yes, partly. Most AI notetakers let you choose where recaps post and some let you filter which meetings post, but few let you pick which sections go out. To limit what reaches Slack: approve the app first, post to a private channel per team, leave workspace-wide auto-posting off, and keep transcripts and recordings behind the notetaker's own permissions.

Below: what five notetakers actually post, the difference between a channel and a DM, which parts of a recap are risky, who sees link previews, the admin controls to look for and a default setup you can copy. For the OAuth scopes a notetaker Slack app should request, see our IT admin checklist. Reline makes an AI notetaker, so we describe our own Slack integration plainly, including what it does not do.

What each notetaker posts to Slack

Every row comes from the vendor's own help page or Slack Marketplace listing, checked in October 2026. Features change, so confirm in a trial workspace before you roll out.

ToolWhat gets postedWhere it can postControls over what posts
FirefliesTitle linked to the full recap, time, participants and a short overview; bullet notes and action items in a threadPublic channel, private channel (invite the bot first) or a DMIntegration Rules filter by title, host, participants or meeting type (Business plan and up); admins can stop non-admins from creating Slack configurations; meetings a teammate marked private are not pushed
OtterNotes and an automatic summary after the meeting, action items to their assignees, reminders before the meeting; pasted Otter links unfurl with the summarySlack channels and assignee messagesIts Slack Marketplace listing describes no meeting filters or section choices; test in a trial workspace before you connect
GranolaA link to the note plus a summaryChannels only; a private channel needs the Granola app addedPer-note Send to Slack or a per-folder auto-post rule; the button only appears when the note has a shareable link
FathomHighlight clips you mark during a call, plus keyword alerts from AI Search; summaries are not part of the native Slack integrationPublic channels onlyYou choose which highlight types link to which channel; clips sent to Slack cannot be deleted
RelineTitle, a one-line intro and an Open in Reline button; the AI summary and the action items as thread replies; never the transcript or the recordingChannels only, set per folder, per teamspace or as a workspace default; no DMsOff by default; only workspace admins connect Slack; a folder can opt in or veto; teamspace-wide posting is a teamspace admin switch

Channel or DM: who ends up reading it

  • Public channel: anyone in the Slack workspace can open it and read the history, including people who join months later.
  • Private channel: only members, but membership drifts. Review it before you route a sales or HR team's recaps there.
  • Slack Connect channel: people from another company are in it. Never route automatic recaps to a shared channel.
  • DM to yourself: the safest place for a recap you want to edit before you forward it. Fireflies supports DMs; Granola, Fathom and Reline post to channels only.

Summary, action items or transcript: what each one exposes

What is postedTypical riskSafer choice
Full AI summaryPricing, names, health or HR details and side remarks end up in plain Slack text that Slack search indexesPost to a private team channel, or read the summary before it goes out
Action items onlyLowest exposure; owners and due dates rarely carry sensitive contextGood default for wide channels
Link to the transcript or recordingSafe only if the link respects the notetaker's permissions; risky if the link is public or the preview shows contentKeep links permission-checked and previews off for protected notes
Video or audio clipsThe clip is the content; on Fathom a clip sent to Slack cannot be deletedSend clips only to channels where everyone could have been on the call

A link preview (an unfurl) can show more than the link. Otter's Slack app unfurls Otter links with the meeting details and the automatic summary. Granola shows a rich preview with title, attendees, date and a summary snippet for notes set to "Anyone with the link"; company-only and private notes show a generic placeholder unless a user or an admin turns previews on for them. Slack caches previews, so changing that setting does not update older messages.

Slack gives you two levers. Any member can remove a preview from their own message. Workspace owners and admins can set how each app's previews behave under App settings (Pro, Business+ and Enterprise) and block previews from specific websites under Workspace settings, Attachments.

Admin controls to look for

  1. App approval in Slack, so members cannot install a notetaker on their own. Approving an app means approving its scopes.
  2. Who can connect the notetaker to Slack: every user, or admins only.
  3. Who can switch on automatic posting for a whole team, and whether that change shows up in an audit log.
  4. Meeting filters: external calls, certain hosts or certain titles never post.
  5. A destination pinned by an admin per team, not a default any user can change.
  6. Section choice: action items only, or a short overview instead of the full summary.
  7. What happens to links: do they check the reader's access, and can previews be turned off?
"you are approving the scopes it will use to take actions in your workspace" (Slack Help Center)

A safe default setup

  1. Turn on app approval in Slack and approve one notetaker.
  2. Create one private channel per team for recaps, for example #recaps-sales, and check its members.
  3. Leave workspace-wide auto-posting off. Turn it on per team or per folder, where everyone in the channel would have been welcome in the meetings.
  4. Exclude external, HR, legal and 1:1 meetings with filters, or keep those notes in folders that never post.
  5. Prefer action items or a short overview in wide channels; keep the full transcript and recording inside the notetaker.
  6. Turn link previews off for protected notes, and tell people a pasted link may show a summary.
  7. Write the routing into your AI notetaker policy and review channel membership every quarter.

How Reline's Slack integration works

  • Only a workspace Owner or Admin can connect Slack. The app requests four bot scopes: channels:read, groups:read, chat:write and chat:write.public. It cannot read channel history or files.
  • Nothing posts by default. A folder opts in, or a teamspace admin turns on posting for the whole teamspace, or a workspace admin turns it on for folders shared with the whole workspace. A folder can always veto, and the workspace switch never reaches private folders.
  • Each post is the note title, a one-line intro and an Open in Reline button. The AI summary follows as a thread reply, and the action items as another reply that stays in sync as items change.
  • The transcript and the recording never go to Slack. The button opens the note in Reline, where notes are private by default, so a channel member without access to the note cannot open it.
  • Reline's Slack app does not request the scope Slack requires for app link previews, so it does not unfurl Reline links.
  • Turning teamspace-wide or workspace-wide posting on or off is written to the workspace audit log, which Enterprise workspaces can review.

What Reline does not do yet: it cannot DM a recap, filter which meetings post by title or attendee, or post only the action items without the summary. If you need those, keep auto-posting on only for folders whose meetings are safe to share in full.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I limit what an AI notetaker's Slack integration shares?
Yes, in part. You can control whether the app is installed, which channel it posts to and, in some tools, which meetings post. Few tools let you drop sections such as the full summary, so route recaps to private team channels and keep transcripts inside the notetaker.
Can a notetaker post my meeting notes to Slack without me knowing?
It can if a teammate or admin set up automatic posting for a team or folder your note sits in. Ask who can turn on auto-posting and whether that change is logged. In Reline, posting is off by default and teamspace-wide posting is recorded in the audit log.
Do Slack link previews show the meeting summary?
They can. Otter links unfurl with the automatic summary, and Granola shows a summary snippet for notes shared with anyone who has the link. Slack admins can control app previews per app, and any member can remove a preview from their own message.
Does making a note private remove it from Slack?
No. Text already posted stays in Slack until someone deletes the message there. Changing the note's sharing or switching auto-posting off only affects future posts.
Does Reline post transcripts or recordings to Slack?
No. Reline posts the note title, the AI summary and the action items to a channel, with a button that opens the note in Reline. The transcript and the recording stay in Reline under its private-by-default permissions.
