How to Record a Jitsi Meeting (and Get a Transcript)
How to record a Jitsi meeting, with sound and a transcript
In this article
To record a Jitsi meeting on meet.jit.si, join in Chrome or Edge on a computer, open More actions, select Record and then Start. Jitsi saves a WebM video on your computer and tells everyone, but makes no transcript. Self-hosted servers can add Jibri server recording. For a transcript with no bot, Reline records your mic and the meeting audio.
What recording options does Jitsi have today?
It depends on the server. meet.jit.si is Jitsi's free public service, and companies, schools and communities also run their own Jitsi Meet servers, where the admin decides what is switched on. Jitsi's software knows four ways to record or transcribe:
| Option | On meet.jit.si | On a self-hosted server | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local recording | On, in Chrome or Edge on a computer | On by default; the admin can turn it off | A WebM video file on your computer |
| Server recording (Jibri) | Off | Only if the admin installs Jibri | A recording file on the server |
| Dropbox upload | Off (no Dropbox setup) | Only if the admin sets up the Dropbox integration | The recording in your Dropbox |
| Transcription | Off | Only if the admin sets it up | A transcript from Jitsi |
We read meet.jit.si's live settings and Jitsi's open-source code on October 29, 2026; a self-hosted server can differ. Older guides describe saving meet.jit.si recordings to Dropbox. Jitsi still supports Dropbox, but only on servers where the admin adds a Dropbox app key, and meet.jit.si's current settings have none.
How to record on meet.jit.si with local recording
- Join the meeting in Chrome or Microsoft Edge on a computer. Jitsi offers local recording only in Chromium-based desktop browsers: not in Firefox or Safari, not on a phone, and not in the Jitsi Meet desktop app.
- Open More actions (the three dots in the toolbar) and select Record. On meet.jit.si you do not need to be the moderator for this.
- Local recording is already the storage location: on meet.jit.si it is the only one. To record only your own side, open Recording options and turn on Record only my audio and video streams.
- Under Record audio and video, select Start. Your browser asks where to save the WebM file (the dialog opens in your Downloads folder), then asks what to share: pick this meeting tab and keep its audio on. If you pick another tab or window, Jitsi asks you to select the current tab.
- Everyone in the meeting sees a notice that you have started a local recording and hears a sound.
- Before you leave, open More actions, select Record again and select Stop. Jitsi warns that the file is saved only if you stop the recording before you exit the meeting.
What the file holds: the meeting tab's video and sound (everyone else) mixed with your microphone. If you turned on Record only my audio and video streams, it holds only you, and Jitsi does not announce it to the others. There is no transcript, because transcription is switched off on meet.jit.si.
Why the record option is missing
- You are in the Jitsi Meet desktop app, a mobile app or a phone browser. Open the same meeting link in Chrome or Edge on a computer.
- You are in Firefox or Safari. Local recording needs a Chromium-based browser with file saving, such as Chrome or Edge.
- You are in a breakout room. Jitsi hides recording there, so go back to the main room.
- The admin of a self-hosted server turned local recording off. Ask what is enabled on that server.
Server recording on a self-hosted Jitsi server (Jibri)
Jibri, short for Jitsi Broadcasting Infrastructure, is Jitsi's server-side recorder. It opens the meeting in its own Chrome instance on a separate machine and records it with ffmpeg, one recording at a time per Jibri. Only a server admin can install it. Once it runs, moderators (or people the server allows to record) start it from the same Record option, Jitsi shows everyone that the meeting is being recorded, and the file is saved on the server. meet.jit.si has server recording switched off.
Record a Jitsi meeting without a bot, with Reline
If you want notes rather than a video, record your computer instead of the meeting. Reline's desktop app records your microphone and the system audio (everyone else in the meeting) locally, then gives you a live transcript in 60+ languages, an AI summary and the kept audio. Nothing joins the meeting, and it also works in Firefox, Safari and the Jitsi Meet desktop app, where Jitsi's own local recording is missing.
On Windows, Mac or Linux (beta)
- Install the Reline desktop app and sign in. You can start on the Free plan.
- Allow the microphone. On Windows 11, open Settings, Privacy & security, Microphone, and turn on "Let desktop apps access your microphone". On a Mac, also allow system audio: on macOS 14.2 and later this is an audio-only permission; on macOS 13 to 14.1 Reline uses the screen and system audio permission, which can need an app restart. Before macOS 13, only your microphone is recorded.
- Join the Jitsi meeting in your browser or in the Jitsi Meet desktop app. When a browser starts using your microphone, Reline can show a prompt to record; it shows up as a browser meeting, not as Jitsi. With the Jitsi Meet desktop app, open Reline yourself.
- Tell everyone you are recording for notes, then press Record in the prompt or in Reline.
- Stop when the meeting ends. You get the transcript, an AI summary next to it and the kept audio, with a play button on every transcript line.
In the browser, with nothing to install
Open Reline in another tab and start a recording. Your microphone records right away; to capture the other side, share the Jitsi meeting tab with its audio once, using your browser's screen-share. This works best in Chrome and other Chromium browsers. The desktop app captures the meeting audio without that sharing step.
Speaker labels: the transcript separates your microphone (Me) from the meeting audio (Other). In a group call, open Who is on the other side beside the record button and choose Separate speakers (beta) to number each voice on the call side. The numbers are an estimate and never names: you click a voice and name it yourself.
| Jitsi local recording | Jibri (self-hosted) | Reline | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it works | Chrome or Edge on a computer | Servers where the admin installed Jibri | Any browser or the Jitsi desktop app, on Windows, Mac or Linux (beta) |
| Who can start it | Any participant on meet.jit.si | Moderators, or people the server allows | You, on your own computer |
| Shows in the meeting | Yes, a notice and a sound (not when you record only your own streams) | Yes, everyone sees that it is recording | No bot and no Jitsi notice |
| What you get | WebM video file on your computer | Recording file on the server | Audio, transcript and AI summary |
| Transcript | No | Only if the admin sets it up | Yes, live, 60+ languages |
What Reline does not do in Jitsi
- No video: Reline keeps audio and a transcript, not a screen recording. For video, use Jitsi's local recording.
- No notice in Jitsi: nobody in the meeting sees that Reline is recording, so you tell them.
- No names on its own: labels are Me vs Other, and the beta Separate speakers option only numbers voices for you to name.
- On Windows it records the whole default output, not one window, so other sounds on your PC are captured too.
- No on-device AI: transcription, summaries and storage run in the cloud, outside your Jitsi server and outside Jitsi's end-to-end encryption if you turned it on. Only the capture is local.
- You press Record yourself, and there is no mobile app.
Tell people you are recording
Jitsi announces its own local recording, unless you record only your own streams, and a Jibri recording shows for everyone. A recorder on your computer such as Reline puts no notice in the meeting, so the notice is on you. Several US states, California among them, require every party to agree before a call is recorded, and in the EU you need a lawful basis under the GDPR and should say why you record. Rules differ by country and state, so check the rules where everyone on the call is. The simple habit: say at the start of the meeting that you are recording for notes, and stop if someone objects.

Common questions
- Can you record a Jitsi meeting?
- Yes. On meet.jit.si, any participant in Chrome or Edge on a computer can start a local recording from More actions. It saves a WebM video on their computer and tells everyone. Self-hosted servers can also offer server recording with Jibri. For a transcript, use a recorder on your computer such as Reline.
- Does Jitsi notify others when you record?
- For its own recording, yes: the others see that you started a local recording and hear a sound, unless you record only your own audio and video. A recorder running on your computer, such as Reline, shows nothing in Jitsi, so tell people yourself.
- Why can't I see the record button in Jitsi?
- Local recording needs Chrome, Edge or another Chromium-based browser on a computer. It is missing in the Jitsi Meet desktop app, the mobile apps, Firefox, Safari and breakout rooms, and the admin of a self-hosted server can turn it off.
- Where are Jitsi recordings saved?
- A local recording goes where you choose when you start it: the save dialog opens in your Downloads folder, and the file is a WebM video. A Jibri recording is saved on the Jitsi server, and its admin decides what happens to it.
- Can Jitsi still record to Dropbox?
- Not on meet.jit.si: its current settings have no Dropbox integration. Jitsi still supports Dropbox on self-hosted servers where the admin adds a Dropbox app key.
- Does Jitsi make a transcript of the meeting?
- Not on meet.jit.si, where transcription is switched off. A self-hosted server can offer it if the admin sets it up. Reline gives you a live transcript in 60+ languages and an AI summary, with no bot in the meeting.
