How to Record Microsoft Teams on Linux (2026)
How to run and record Microsoft Teams on Linux
In this article
Microsoft no longer supports a Teams desktop app on Linux, so you run Teams for the web or install it as an app from Chrome or Edge. Teams' Record button needs a qualifying license and a recording policy. To record without a bot, Reline's Linux (beta) app captures your mic and the call audio locally; transcription runs in the cloud.
Is there a Microsoft Teams app for Linux?
Not from Microsoft. Its own client overview on Microsoft Learn lists Linux as "no longer supported", and its system requirements page says Linux users get Teams for the web and Teams as a progressive web app (PWA). Teams for the web is supported on Linux in the latest three versions of Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome and Firefox. The app install (PWA) is a Chrome and Edge feature. Unofficial community wrappers exist, but Microsoft does not support them, so this guide sticks to the official route.
Install Teams on Ubuntu, Linux Mint or Arch
- Install Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Microsoft offers Edge for Linux as a .deb package, which installs on Ubuntu, Debian and Linux Mint; Chrome offers one too. On Arch, Chromium is in the official repositories.
- Open teams.microsoft.com for a work or school account, or teams.live.com for a personal account, and sign in.
- Install it as an app. In Edge, click the "App available" icon in the address bar, then Install. In Chrome, click the install icon in the address bar, or open the three-dot menu and choose Cast, save, and share, then Install page as app.
- Allow the microphone and camera when the browser asks. Teams now opens in its own window and sits in your app launcher like any other app.
Option 1: Teams' own Record button
Teams records in the cloud from its own Record button, but only if you have a qualifying license (such as Microsoft 365 Business or Office 365 E3), the organizer has the cloud recording policy turned on and an admin has enabled recording for you. Guests and people from another organization cannot start or stop a recording. When recording starts, Microsoft notifies everyone in the meeting automatically. Microsoft documents the steps for the desktop and mobile apps, so if the button is missing in Teams for the web, ask your admin before you assume Linux is the problem.
Option 2: record Teams on Linux without a bot, with Reline
If you are a guest, have no recording license, or just want your own notes, record your computer instead of the meeting. Reline ships a Linux desktop app (beta) that records your microphone and the system audio (everyone else on the call) through PulseAudio or PipeWire, which every current mainstream distro ships. We verified the full pipeline on Ubuntu 24.04. Nothing joins the call.
- Download the Reline Linux desktop app (beta) and sign in. You can start on the Free plan.
- Join your meeting in the Teams PWA or a browser tab, with the call playing through an unmuted output. If the output is muted, Linux hands Reline silence for the other side.
- Press Record in Reline. The live transcript starts as people talk, in 60+ languages with automatic language detection.
- Stop when the call ends. You get the transcript, an AI summary next to it, and the kept audio, with a play button on every transcript line.
If the desktop app gives you trouble on your distro, the full app also runs in the browser, and the web app can capture call audio in Chrome or Edge on a desktop computer.
| Teams' Record button | Reline on Linux (beta) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can use it | Licensed users allowed by policy; not guests | Anyone in the call, guests included |
| Shows in the meeting | Yes, everyone is notified | No bot and no Teams notice |
| What you get | Cloud video recording | Audio, transcript and AI summary |
| Speaker labels | Names from Teams | Me vs Other (names only via the browser extension) |
What Reline does not do on Linux
- No video: Reline keeps audio and a transcript, not a screen recording.
- Speakers are labeled Me vs Other (your microphone vs the call audio). Real names come only from the Reline Chrome extension, with Teams for the web open in a Chrome tab.
- No on-device AI: transcription, summaries and storage run in the cloud. Only the capture is local.
- The Linux app is still labeled beta, and there is no mobile app.
Tell people you are recording
A local recorder puts no notice in Teams, so the notice is on you. Several US states, California among them, require every party to agree before a call is recorded, and in the EU you need a lawful basis under the GDPR and should say why you record. Rules differ by country and state, so check the rules where everyone on the call is. The simple habit: say at the start of the call that you are recording for notes, and stop if someone objects.
Common questions
- Is there a Microsoft Teams app for Linux?
- Not an official desktop app. Microsoft lists Linux as no longer supported and points Linux users to Teams for the web and the Teams progressive web app, which you install from Chrome or Edge.
- How do I install Teams on Ubuntu or Linux Mint?
- Install Chrome or Edge (both offer .deb packages), open teams.microsoft.com, sign in, then use the install icon in the address bar. Teams then opens in its own window like an app.
- Does Teams work in Firefox on Linux?
- Yes for Teams for the web: Microsoft supports the latest three Firefox versions on Linux. The install-as-app step in this guide uses Chrome or Edge.
- Can I record a Teams meeting on Linux as a guest?
- Not with Teams' Record button, which guests cannot use. A local recorder such as Reline's Linux (beta) app records your mic and the call audio from your own computer. Tell the other attendees first.
- Does Teams notify people when Reline records?
- No. Nothing joins the meeting, so Teams shows no recording notice. That is why you should say you are recording at the start of the call.
- Does Reline record Teams video on Linux?
- No. Reline records audio and builds a transcript and summary. For video, use the Teams Record button if your license and policy allow it.
