Does Microsoft Teams notify participants when you record?
Yes, for Teams’ own recording. When someone starts a recording or transcription in Teams, everyone in the meeting is notified, and admins can require participants to agree first. That notice covers recording started inside Teams. It cannot see audio captured locally on your own machine, so disclosure stays your job.

The details
- The notice is tied to Teams’ own recording and transcription. Microsoft’s guidance is blunt about it: start a recording and “everyone will be notified automatically”, on desktop, web and mobile.
- Admins can go further. A meeting policy called “Require participant agreement for recording and transcription” prompts each person to agree when recording starts, and anyone who declines gets a view-only experience.
- A third-party notetaker bot is a different case. It joins as a participant, so it sits in the roster under its own name even where the Teams recording banner is not what fired.
- Local capture is the case the banner cannot cover. Reline records what your computer plays plus your microphone, on your machine. Nothing joins the meeting, so there is no participant to list and no signal for Teams to raise a notice about.
- That mechanism does not remove your duty to disclose. Microsoft itself warns that, depending on your region, you may need everyone’s permission before you record them. Some jurisdictions need one-party consent, others need everyone.
