Does Google Meet notify participants when you record?
Yes, for Meet’s own features. Google says participants get a notification when a recording starts or stops, transcripts show an icon to everyone, and Gemini note-taking is announced to the whole meeting. That covers what starts inside Meet. It cannot see audio captured locally on your machine.

The details
- The notice is tied to Meet’s own features. Google’s help pages are direct about it: participants get a notification when the recording starts or stops, including people outside the organization and people on mobile, even though they cannot control the recording.
- Transcripts and AI notes are announced too. With transcripts on, a Transcripts icon shows for everyone in the meeting, and anyone joining a meeting where the host pre-enabled it gets an on-screen warning. When “Take notes for me” is running, Google tells all participants and a pencil icon appears on every screen.
- A third-party notetaker bot is a different case. It joins as a participant, so it sits in the people list under its own name, and everyone watches it arrive even though no Meet recording banner fired.
- Local capture is the case the banner cannot cover. Reline records what your computer plays plus your microphone, on your machine. Nothing joins the call, so there is no participant to list and no Meet event to attach a notice to.
- That mechanism does not remove your duty to disclose. Consent law varies by place: one party’s consent is enough in some jurisdictions, everyone’s is required in others. Say it out loud at the start. This is general information, not legal advice, and the practical version is here: https://www.reline.so/answers/do-you-have-to-tell-people-youre-recording
- Announce it, then let the tool take the notes. Recording Google Meet without a bot, step by step: https://www.reline.so/record/google-meet
