Put names on your meeting transcripts

Reline separates your microphone from everyone else automatically. Speaker Tags adds the missing half: the actual names. It works by reading the participant names your meeting app already shows on your screen, so the setup below is about giving Reline a way to see them.

Setting it up

Install the companion extension

Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and browser-joined Zoom run inside your browser, and Reline cannot see inside a browser tab on its own. The Reline Speaker Tags extension is what bridges that gap. Open Settings, then Transcription, then Speaker tags in Reline, and use the Set up button next to the platform you use.

Turn on speaker names in the extension

The extension opens a page the first time it is installed and reads nothing at all until you press Turn on speaker names there. You can turn it back off from that same page whenever you want. If you closed the page, click the extension's toolbar icon to get back to it.

Turn on Speaker Tags in Reline

In Settings, then Transcription, then Speaker tags, switch Speaker Tags on with the toggle at the top of the page. Each platform below it shows its own status, so you can tell at a glance whether the extension is connected. Zoom on the macOS desktop app has one extra switch of its own, because it needs macOS Accessibility access.

Record your next call

Start a note and start recording as usual. Names appear in the transcript as people speak. With only one other person in the call Reline can name them from the participant list alone; with more people it names a line when one person is clearly speaking, and leaves the line unnamed rather than guessing when several people talk at once.

What the extension reads

Two things, and only on meeting pages: the participant names already displayed on your screen, and which participant is currently speaking.
Both go to Reline on the same computer: the desktop app over a local connection, or a Reline tab open in the same browser. The extension itself sends nothing over the internet, to our servers or anyone else's: none of it leaves your computer.
It never touches audio. It requests no microphone access and does not run on any site other than Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Zoom's in-browser meeting pages.
It reads nothing until you consent, and you can withdraw that consent at any time from the extension's own page or by removing the extension.

Where names work

Speaker Tags reads the meeting app's own interface, so it works exactly where Reline can see that interface, and nowhere else. Here is the honest picture.

In-person conversations

No. There is no participant list to read, so Reline separates speakers without naming them.

The extension runs in Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc. Safari and Firefox are not supported yet.

Zoom's desktop app is read through macOS Accessibility, which is why it is macOS only. Joining Zoom from your browser works everywhere the extension does.

If names are not showing

The extension says it is waiting for Reline

That is the correct state when Reline is not running. Open the Reline desktop app, or open Reline in a tab in the same browser, and the status changes on its own within a few seconds.

Everything is connected but the transcript has no names

Check that Speaker Tags is switched on in Settings, then Transcription, then Speaker tags: installing the extension alone is not enough. Also make sure the meeting is open in the same browser the extension is installed in, and in the same browser profile.

A line has the wrong name, or a name is missing

Reline names a line only when one person is clearly speaking, so lines where several people talk at once stay unnamed on purpose. If a name is wrong, select the line in the transcript and use Rename speaker to correct it and every other line from that person.

I installed the extension while already in a meeting

Browsers do not add a new extension to tabs that are already open. Reload the meeting tab and names start working from that point on.
