Discord has no built-in call recorder. Its Clips feature saves at most two minutes, only while you stream, on Windows. To record a whole Discord call with audio on a PC or Mac, use OBS for video, Audacity for audio on Windows, or Reline (reline.so) for both sides plus a transcript, with no bot in the server.

Discord's help center describes no way to record a full call, and recording bots are not welcome in every server. Since March 2, 2026, Discord requires end-to-end encryption for audio and video in DMs, group DMs, voice channels and Go Live streams. That protects the call on its way between devices, but your computer still plays everyone's voice, and a recorder on your computer captures it there. The options below work for a 1:1 DM call, a group DM call (up to 10 people) or a server voice channel.

Does Discord have a built-in call recorder?

No. The closest thing is Clips. Discord's Clips article (updated October 26, 2026) describes it as an Early Access feature for Nitro members, on Windows only (not Mac, mobile or console), that works while you stream: press Alt+C or the Save Clip icon and Discord saves the last 30 seconds, 60 seconds or 2 minutes of your stream to your computer. When you edit a clip you can switch the voice channel audio on or off. That is a highlight, not a recording of a one-hour call.

Option 1: record a Discord call with OBS Studio (PC and Mac)

OBS Studio is free, records video and audio, and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. You get a video file with the call audio, but no transcript.

OBS on Windows

  1. Install OBS Studio from obsproject.com and open it.
  2. OBS captures your desktop audio and your microphone by default. Join the Discord call and watch the Audio Mixer: the desktop audio meter should move when someone else talks. If it does not, pick the headset or speakers you hear Discord on in Settings > Audio.
  3. For the picture too, add a Window Capture source and choose the Discord window. For audio only, skip this step.
  4. Click Start Recording in the Controls dock, and Stop Recording when the call ends. Settings > Output shows where OBS saves the file.

OBS on a Mac

  1. Use OBS Studio 30 or later on macOS 13 (Ventura) or later.
  2. Add a macOS Audio Capture source. OBS can capture all desktop audio or a single application, so you can pick Discord and leave out music and notification sounds.
  3. Check that your microphone shows in the Audio Mixer, so your own voice is in the file.
  4. For video, add a macOS Screen Capture source. Allow OBS in System Settings if macOS asks for a recording permission.
  5. Click Start Recording, then Stop Recording when you hang up.

On macOS 12 or earlier, OBS's own guide points to third-party audio drivers such as VB-CABLE, Loopback or Sound Siphon.

Option 2: record Discord audio with Audacity

Audacity is a free audio editor and the usual answer when you want sound only.

Audacity on Windows

  1. In Audacity, open the audio setup and set the host to Windows WASAPI.
  2. As the recording device, choose the headset or speakers you hear Discord on. It is marked (loopback).
  3. Press Record, talk on Discord as usual, and press Stop at the end. Export the file from the File menu.

Audacity on a Mac

Audacity's own guide says macOS has no built-in desktop audio recording and points to Soundflower, which it notes does not work on Apple Silicon Macs. So on an Apple Silicon Mac, Audacity's own route records your microphone but not Discord's sound unless you install another audio driver; OBS's macOS Audio Capture source or Reline is simpler.

Option 3: the screen recorder built into Windows or macOS

  • Windows, Xbox Game Bar: press Windows key + G, open Settings, go to Capturing and set the audio to All, so all computer sounds are recorded. Click into the Discord window, then press Windows key + Alt + R to start and stop, and Windows key + Alt + M to switch your microphone on or off. Microsoft saves an MP4 in the Captures folder inside Videos.
  • Mac, Screenshot toolbar (Shift-Command-5): Apple's guide says that on macOS 27 or later you can choose Include System Audio. On macOS 26 and earlier you can pick only a microphone, so the other people are recorded only if your mic hears them from the speakers.

Option 4: a recording bot such as Craig

Recording bots join a voice channel like a member. Craig, a well-known one, says on its site that it records voice and stage channels with a separate audio track for each speaker, for up to 6 hours, and keeps recordings for 7 days. Someone who can add apps to the server has to invite it, its site describes server channels rather than DM calls, and some communities do not allow bots at all. If you want no bot in the room, record on your own computer instead.

Option 5: record a Discord call with a transcript and no bot (Reline)

If you want notes rather than a video, record your computer instead of the call. Reline's desktop app records your microphone (you) and the system audio (everyone else in the call) locally, then gives you a live transcript, an AI summary and the kept audio. Nothing joins the call or the server, and you need no server permissions. Reline does not detect Discord calls by itself, so you press Record.

On a Mac

  1. Install the Reline desktop app for Mac and sign in. The Free plan is enough to start.
  2. Allow the microphone when macOS asks, then allow system audio: on macOS 14.2 and later this is an audio-only permission, in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording.
  3. Press Record in Reline, then join the Discord call. The transcript starts streaming as people talk.
  4. Stop the recording when you leave the call. You get the transcript, an AI summary next to it and the kept audio.

On a Windows PC

  1. Install the Reline desktop app for Windows, sign in and allow the microphone.
  2. Make the headset you hear Discord on your Windows default output, and in Discord's voice and video settings leave the output device on default or pick that same headset. Reline records the whole default output, so Discord playing on another device is missed, and other sounds on that device are recorded too.
  3. Press Record in Reline, then join the call.
  4. Stop when you leave and open the note for the transcript, summary and audio.

Discord calls on Linux

Discord's download page offers Linux builds (deb, rpm and tar.gz). The Reline Linux desktop app (beta) records a Discord call the same way as on Mac and Windows: your microphone plus system audio through PulseAudio or PipeWire.

What Reline does not do on Discord

  • No video and no stream capture: Reline keeps audio and a transcript. For the picture, run OBS or a screen recorder next to it.
  • Me vs Other speaker labels: your microphone is Me, everything your computer plays is Other. In a voice channel everyone else is Other; Reline does not name Discord participants.
  • No recording of a Discord call on your phone: Reline has desktop apps for Mac, Windows and Linux (beta) and a web app, no mobile app.
  • It does not start by itself for Discord: press Record when the call begins.
  • Capture is local and no bot joins, but transcription, AI and storage run in the cloud.

Discord shows no notice when you record on your computer, and neither do OBS, Audacity or Reline, so telling people is on you. Discord's Community Guidelines (read October 27, 2026) do not address call recording, but they do say not to share someone's personal information without consent, and many servers set their own rules. Check the server rules, say at the start of the call that you are recording and why, and stop if someone objects.

  • United States: federal law (18 U.S.C. 2511(2)(d)) allows recording when one party consents, but several states, such as California (Penal Code 632), require every party to agree to record a confidential call. With people in another state, the stricter rule is the safe default.
  • Germany and the EU: in Germany, recording someone's non-public spoken words without permission can be a criminal offence (Section 201 of the Criminal Code), and data protection law (GDPR) can apply to recordings of identifiable people.
  • Elsewhere: rules differ by country, and a Discord call often has people in several. Check the rules where everyone on the call is. This is not legal advice.

FAQ

Common questions

Can you record a Discord call on PC?
Yes. Discord has no full call recorder, so use a tool on your PC: OBS Studio for video and audio, Audacity with a WASAPI loopback device for the other people's audio, Xbox Game Bar, or Reline for both sides plus a transcript and summary.
How do I record a Discord call on a Mac with audio?
Use OBS Studio 30 or later with a macOS Audio Capture source set to Discord, or Reline for Mac, which records the call audio and your mic after you allow its system audio permission. The Shift-Command-5 toolbar records system audio only on macOS 27 or later.
Does Discord notify people when you record a call?
Not when you record on your computer. OBS, Audacity, Game Bar and Reline put no notice in the call, so tell people yourself. A recording bot is different: it sits in the voice channel where everyone can see it.
Can I record a Discord call with Audacity?
On Windows, yes: set the host to Windows WASAPI and record from your headset or speakers marked (loopback). That captures the others, not your own mic. On a Mac, Audacity needs an extra audio driver to hear Discord.
Does Discord have a built-in recorder?
No full-call recorder. Clips saves up to the last 2 minutes of a stream, on Windows, as an Early Access feature for Nitro members.
Is the recording processed on my computer?
Only the capture is local. Transcription, AI summaries and storage run in the cloud.
